Poor Henry Meinzen

Henry and Elizabeth Meinzen had a wealth of 15 children and the possibility of the Meinzen surname being carried on through their seven sons.  They have a great posterity but if Henry's hope was to have his surname continue through generations, he was, indeed, a poor man.

Below are 14 of Henry and Elizabeth's 15 children and their grandchildren.  The sons and grandson with the Meinzen surname are in red.

  1.  Henry Meinzen (1870 - 1956) + Ella Dray
       Margaret Meinzen (1900-1969)
       Sarah Meinzen (1902-
       Male Infant Meinzen (1904-1904)

 3.  Hannah Elizabeth Meinzen (1875-1910) + John Hendricks
      Edna Hendricks (1908-1997)
      Elizabeth Zerelda Hendricks (1909-1997)
      Anna Hendricks (1910-1911)

 4.  Edward J. C. F. Meinzen (1879-1911)

 5.  Marie Isabella Meinzen  (1880-1967) + Benjamin Hashman
      Cecil Hashman (1903-1938)
      Benjamin Hashman (1904-1904)
      Marie Hashman (1905-1918)
      Nellie Hashman (1907-1980)
      Joseph William Hashman (~1913-1998)
      Gladys Hashman (~1915-after 2005)
      Isabelle Hashman (1921-2005)

 6.  Walter Meinzen (1882-1907) + Nellie Leonhart

 7.  Elizabeth Wilhelmina Meinzen (1885-1986) + George K. Harris
      Sidney Harris (1914-2002)
      Clarence Harris (?-before 1985)
      George Harris (?-before 2004)
      Bertha Harris (1919-2004)
      Betty Harris (?-2004)

 8.  Lula Bernesa Meinzen (1887-1979) + Charles Sticker

 9.  Bertha Meinzen (1888-1918) + William Henderson
      William Henderson (1909/20-1990)

10.  Stillborn Infant (1891)

11.  William Carl Robert Meinzen (1892-1979) + Emma Bickerstaff
       Audrey Meinzen (1915-1997)
       Geraldine Meinzen (1918-1984)
       Doris Meinzen (1921-2017)
       Pauline Meinzen (1927-2005)

12.  Jacob Increase Meinzen (1893-1917) + Sudie Jane Coss
       Elizabeth Ann Meinzen (1917-2015)

13.  Carl Nelson Meinzen (1896-1896)

14.  Naomi Faye Meinzen (1898/99-1979) + Russel Rhome

It is astonishing to me that of Henry and Elizabeth's known seven sons
-- one died in infancy
-- one died as a youth
-- one remained unmarried with no children
-- one married and had no children
-- one married and had daughters and one only son who died in infancy
-- two married and had only daughters

Within two generations Henry had no living male descendants carrying his surname.  Poor Henry.

  1. Wow If it weren't for bad luck... it's surprising how often this happened, especially with large families.

    1. Oh, yes, I know what you mean, Ellie. So far, this is the only family with a surname that "died" but I have lots of ancestors to research yet!

  2. What a clever twist on the theme. We have very few Jolletts because there were so many daughters and few sons.

    1. Thanks, Wendy. I suppose that happens in lots of families but it was the first and only time I've noticed among my ancestors' families.
