County, Township, Range

A township is a geographic area within a county.  A range is a group of townships.  I knew the township of the records I wanted to find in FamilySearch's collection, Ohio, Trumbull County, tax records, 1823-1931, but not the range.  I paged through the volumes for the year 1931 knowing I would eventually find the county of interest.  Had I known about ranges, I could have saved myself some time.  (To be fair to myself, I did a google search for "Trumbull County, Ohio, Township Ranges" and found nothing useful.)  At the end of this post I've included a few links about county/township/range for anyone who would like to know.

The Trumbull County volumes are organized by year, then by range (which is a "column" of townships from north to south within the county--see box below), then by township or other geographic area.  The property owners are listed alphabetically within each category.  As I paged through the volumes I noted the image numbers for the beginning and end of the townships, cities, villages, and towns.  I hope this information may be useful to others searching for Trumbull County ancestors.  Please note that while the years and volumes change, the townships in each range remain the same through the years.

One interesting thing about these records is that there was no introduction in any of volumes explaining abbreviations.  I'm left wondering what JDW and SSD stand for and assuming that CSD is City School District; VSD may be Village School District; and JSD may be Joint School District.  Or maybe not.

Since working on this research I've tried to learn more about ranges, townships, and counties and found a helpful general resource at USGS's The National Map Small Scale website which explains the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) and it's origin, history, and organization.

I think Wikipedia's article, Public Land Survey System, gives an even more in-depth history and explanation.  It also has notes about the states with arrangements different than the 36, six-miles-on-each-side townships.  I learned that northern Ohio counties have 25 townships (arranged five by five) per county because

Ohio's Virginia Military District was surveyed using the metes and bounds system.  Areas in northern Ohio (the Connecticut Western Reserve and United States Military District) were surveyed with another standard, sometimes referred to as Congressional Survey townships, which are just five miles (8 km) on each side instead of six.  Hence, there are 25 sections per township there, rather than 36.

Trumbull County was originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve.

Knowing about ranges in counties should make research easier the next time I look for property information for my ancestors.

Index of Names on FHL Film 252774, (Northumberland) Letters of Administration and Probates Granted

While searching for a will for William Doyle who died in Northumberland, U.K., in 1838, I found the film Letters of Administration and Probates Granted, ca. 1832-1893 (FHL Film #252774 aka Film #004629095).  I've indexed the names and dates as a random act of genealogical kindness.  Maybe someone else will find an ancestor in this list (even though I didn't find my William).  

From the information in the image above it looks like the film must be viewed at either a Family History Center or the Family History Library but I was able to sign in and view it at home.  You may or may not have the same access but from the list below you will at least be able to see if an ancestor's name is on the film and if it is, go to a local Family History Center if you don't have access at home.

Mixed/Misidentified Church Records on Ancestry - Church Record Sunday

The Durham Reformed Church, Durham, Bucks County, Pennsylvania on Ancestry.com's Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Church and Town Records, 1708-1985 contain more geographic locations than Durham.  I found several Butler County, Penna, ancestors buried in the records.  Here are some details about this particular collection.

The Durham collection contains 278 images, a little over half of which are from Durham churches.  But beginning at image 144 you will find a minister's record book with information from other parishes, too.  I assume that because the minister ended his service in Durham, Pennsylvania, his record book remained in that parish with those records.  Hence, its appearance with the Durham Reformed Church records on Ancestry.

Rev. Charles F. Althouse was the pastor at St. Peter's Reformed Church in Fairview, Butler County, Pennsylvania, from February 15, 1897 to June 30, 1902.  It is his record book you will see beginning at image 144.

Bless his heart, Rev. Althouse was a record-keeper extraordinaire.  His journal begins (at image 146/page 1 of his record book) with the pastorates where he served and the dates of service.

Knowing the dates of when and where he served will help when looking at the recorded names and dates on the journal pages:  in the lists of baptisms, marriages, funerals, etc., he made no indication where one parish's records end and the next begin.

I've written this post because finding my own Butler County ancestors in Bucks County records at Ancestry was confusing.  (This post would have helped when I first began but I don't know if I would have found it.)  This information clarifies this resource and will help me if I want to search the record book for other funerals, marriages, and/or baptisms.  I know Ancestry.com has the names indexed but a researcher may overlook them, especially if the surname is a very common one.  Perhaps this information will be useful to someone else but if not, I know I'll refer back to it.  (I wish there were a place on Ancestry at Durham Reformed Church where I could link to this post so it could be helpful to others.)

Now if only Rev. Abner Dale kept a record book and it were available online, I would be thrilled.  I'm sure it would include baptism and marriage records for two families of ancestors.

Mineral Ridge High School Graduates, 1881-1954 - RAOGK

Mineral Ridge High School was our hometown school.  My mother, Audrey (Meinzen) Doyle, all her siblings, many cousins, and my siblings and I all graduated from Mineral Ridge High School in Weathersfield Township, Trumbull County, Ohio.  In 1954 Mom attended the alumni banquet and saved the program.  In the interest of local history and as a random act of genealogical kindness, I'm posting images of the program and a transcribed list of students.  If any descendants of Mineral Ridge graduates are searching for ancestors, I hope the search engines will find them in this list.

The booklet also includes advertisements of the supporters of the Alumni Association.  They are listed on the inside front cover and on last pages.  They give a flavor of the Ridge in 1954.  Lest you're wondering why orange:  the Ridge's school colors were orange and black.

Whoever created this program was very kind to the ladies:  he/she included their married surnames (in parentheses and probably when available).  An asterisk is used to indicate that the person was deceased.  Names follow pages.

Results of First Time Indexing Obituaries

A week or so ago I indexed obituaries for the first time at FamilySearch.  They are a little different than indexing census records because you have to read the obituary, find all the names and relationships for each person named in the obituary, and enter that information into a form.  I read the instructions and checked them again when I had a question or was unsure, but I wasn't sure how well I was doing. 

I'm pleased to report than my entries were 97% accurate.  By checking the arbitration results I learned that when a mother's maiden name is included with her married surname (without parentheses), both surnames are entered, not just her maiden or married surname.

One wonderful thing about indexing obituaries is that they are newspaper clippings so there is no handwriting to decipher.  Easy compared to reading those census takers' handwriting styles.

Indexing Obituaries at FamilySearch

Our church meetings were cancelled today because of the snow.  What to do with 3 hours?  Easy answer:  family history!  I could have worked on my own family history:  I know my ancestors would have appreciated the time, especially considering that I've been away for several weeks and devoted no time to them.  Instead, I decided to donate the time to others by indexing at FamilySearch.  I haven't indexed for a year, maybe more, so beginning with FamilySearch's new project of indexing obituaries took a little time to orient myself.  It's a different experience than indexing census records.

I downloaded a batch using the indexing software already on my computer and began (instead of researching the process first, and then downloading a batch).  As I was figuring out how to proceed I found myself clicking back and forth between screens to read how they wanted it done.

One of the helpful sites was this FamilySearch Blog post, 2014:  The Year of the Obituaries.  The author of the post admits that indexing obituaries can be tricky but she gives a good introduction to the process by sharing some of the most basic and important points to know.  For example,

• Read the entire obituary before indexing names.
• Index the deceased person first.
• Index names in the order they appear in the obituary.
• Only index names, dates, and locations actually mentioned in the document.
• Etc.

This post also links to other helpful sites, including examples and a pdf with step-by-step, illustrated instructions.

My first obituary was a little challenging:  the lady had been married twice and three surnames were listed at the beginning of the obituary.  I had to decide how to index those three names.  Arbitration will show me whether I should have done it a different way.  I think indexed 14 names in that obituary.

I notice that most of the indexing projects are intermediate or advanced.  Maybe FamilySearch thought the census records (which were beginner level) were good enough practice for those of us who indexed them to become intermediate indexers.

Indexing obituaries is a very good thing.  It reminded me not to assume or take anything for granted when reading an obituary.  Further research can confirm some of the things we'd like to assume but when reading an obituary, take just what's there.  Additionally, what's there may not always be exactly accurate.  Whenever I've found obituaries for my ancestors I always take them as hints, then research based on the hints.

If you haven't indexed for a while or haven't indexed obituaries yet, I encourage you to give it a try.  It was a great way to spend part of an afternoon.

"G" Surnames, Butler County, Pennsylvania Probate Files, 1895-1903

Note:  Since I originally posted this list I've finished looking at all the records in Butler County, Pennsylvania Probate files 1895-1907 no G343-465 and have added the names and image numbers.

Below is a partial list (through image 2004 and about the year 1903) of individuals whose last names begin with the letter G and whose wills were probated in Butler County, Pennsylvania, between 1895 and about 1903.  These names appear on the FamilySearch collection, Pennsylvania, Probate Records, 1683-1994, specifically Probate files 1895-1907 no G343-465.   (At this time, this collection is not indexed but can be browsed.)  The numbers after each name below indicate the image numbers, not page numbers.  Type the number into the box at the top of the FamilySearch page and click the arrow to go to the page.  Again. this is a partial list which goes only to page 2004, about the year 1903.

There are 3141 images in the collection.  I stopped at image 2004, in 1903, because the man I was trying to find died in 1899.  My method for searching was to move forward 5 images at a time.  If that image showed a different name, I went back 4 images, then forward 1 page at a time until I found the next name.

This post is an offering of a Random Act of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK).  Since I had to search page by page I thought I might as well write down the names and image numbers.  I hope it will be helpful to anyone using a search engine to find an ancestor whose name is on the above list -- at least until the images are indexed.

RAOGK: The Bible of Wells Rogers

This is a Random Act of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK) for a friend who is seeking descendants of the family of Wells Rogers, born about 1829 in New York. She found his Bible among her mother's things and would like to learn if her own family is related to Wells's family. She's done some research but hasn't yet made a connection. I suggested posting the Bible to see if anyone else might be searching and find the photographs here. So that's what we're doing. Unfortunately, the Bible does not have family history pages.

This is the information she's collected thus far:
Wells's parents were Hiram Rogers, b. 1795 and Cynthia.
His grandparents were Eliphalet Rogers, b. 1764 and Irene.
Wells Rogers married Henrietta, b. 1837.
Their children include Harriet Rogers, b. 1857; Mackintire, b. 1859; Marie, b. 1867; and Nelly J., b. 1878.
Wells's son, Mackintire, married Katherine and they had a daughter, Harriet J. in 1889.

A Debt of Gratitude and William O. Henderson

I owe a debt of gratitude to several bloggers and a Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness volunteer for helping me in my quest to find William O. Henderson.

About a month ago I wrote a post about the challenges of finding William O. Henderson, son of my grandfather's sister and her husband, William R. and Bertha (Meinzen) Henderson. I wrote the post hoping that some other family member might find it and contact me with further information. No family member has, but several bloggers made comments to the post which were immensely helpful, with the result that I've found William O. I want them to know that I am grateful for their help. Thank you!

The first comment was from Kerry Scott of Clue Wagon who recommended that I order an SS-5. I decided to wait to request it until I was able to determine with a little more accuracy whether there were other William Hendersons and to see if I could find an obituary or some other less expensive source for the man from Brooklyn.

The next suggestion came from Karen of Ancestor Soup who suggested I contact a volunteer in Brooklyn, NY, at Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK) (2nd from the bottom, she said) where I would find a volunteer who would copy information on public records.

Apple from Apple's Tree recommended a newspaper website, Fulton History, with old New York newspapers. She was kind enough to have already done a preliminary search and knew that there were over 300 references to William Henderson in Brooklyn, New York, though she didn't know if any were mine. She provided the specific search string with exact directions for getting to the search results.

Finally, Natasha of Today's Gift wondered if William may have been Bill in the 1930 census. That was something I hadn't considered and will see if I can find him. He would have been about 21. Thank you, blogging friends. I appreciate your help.

I tried Apple's newspaper search first. She told me it would be slow to load. It completely stopped my computer. I thought I'd go back to that source later. I hesitated to try RAOGK because I'd asked a volunteer to do something before, she agreed, and then nothing happened. So I put William O. on hold. Then late last week I noticed that someone had come to my blog as the result of a search for William Oliver Henderson. That was just the motivation I needed to continue my search.

On Monday I searched the Fulton History site and found that the William O. Hendersons who were mentioned predated the birth of my William O. That site was not helpful for this particular search but because my husband's family comes from upper New York and my daughter is working on his family history, that site could potentially be very, very helpful. Thank you again, Apple.

Next I went to the RAOGK site and emailed Jessica Scheiber, the Brooklyn, NY, volunteer. I explained what I was hoping to find and asked if the kind of searches she did could help me. She responded a few hours later after having done a preliminary google search. The options were to order a death certificate which would require that I prove a relationship; or she could search the index cards for Surrogate's Records. If she found a card for William O., she said she could pull his file and see what she could find. I asked her to please look in the Surrogate's Records whenever she had time. On Tuesday evening Jess sent information that confirmed that the man who died in Brooklyn in 1990 was my William O. Henderson. She provided so much information -- the date of the will; the names of the heirs; his address when the will was written; his date and place of birth; the date, time, and location of his death; his wife's name and their marriage date and location; his profession; the cemetery where he was buried; and the name and address of funeral home that took care of the funeral.

I am so grateful to Kerry, Karen, Apple, Natasha, and Jessica Scheiber for their help. Thank you, ladies. I hope I can return the favor or pay it forward to someone else searching for a pesky ancestor. And one last note. It seems that Jess has had some less than pleasant experiences with people requesting her help. If you choose to ask a volunteer from RAOGK to do something for you, please be kind and patient with them. We never know another person's time commitments and restraints.

A Play at Schaaf Junior High, Parma, Ohio, 1954

This post is for people who might be searching for photos of themselves or ancestors who attended Schaaf Junior High School in Parma, Ohio, in 1954 and participated in a musicomedy, "The Belle of the West." The participants were in 8th grade in 1954 so now, in 2009, are probably between the ages of 69 and 71. The play was presented on Thursday and Friday nights, December 2 & 3. Tickets cost 40 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.
