Notes and Comments
This birth certificate confirms several pieces of information that I already have:
- Emma's name, birth date, and location of birth.
- the names of her parents and the locations of their births.
- Approximate ages of parents could be deduced from their ages when Emma was born.
- that both parents died before 1951
- It appears to confirm her marriage to a man whose last name is Leathers.
- It confirms George T. Doyle was Emma's uncle. Other records show William and George as brothers, sons of Andrew and Elizabeth Jane (Laws) Doyle.
I remember my father and aunt, who were born in 1913 and 1921, speaking of the McClearns. They were probably fairly old by that time. I haven't researched them at all.
I doubt this certificate could be considered primary evidence. Yes, Emma was there at her birth she would not have had a memory of it. As far as the affiants, I suspect they remembered her being born but I wonder if their memories were acute enough to have known the date without a prompt.
And when it comes down to it, this birth certificate is more than I had before I found it.

In my fathers papers I found a copy of my grandmother (Gertrude O'Rourke Dowd} and her brother William O'Rourke. I had just given them a cursory glance but a few years later I found her parents were from County Limerick. I was able to find the correct birth records with that information
ReplyDeleteWow, what a find, Claudia! I don't know about you but when I first began, I think I missed some things on records that now, when reviewing them, I see are great leads to future information. Lucky you to have found the birth records.
DeleteI love finding delayed birth certificates. But I hate the ones that indicate there was a family Bible because then I am angry that I'm not the one who has it. HA!
ReplyDeleteOh, how awful, Wendy, to know there's a family Bible floating around out there and you can't get your hands on it. My great aunt once told me she had the Gerner family Bible plus tintypes of her parents. She'd entrusted them to one of her children for safe-keeping because she'd moved into a small apartment. It seems the tintypes disappeared but she was able to provide me copies of the births, marriages, and death pages of the Bible. I was sad the tintypes were gone, especially because at the time I had no idea what my great-grandparents looked like. It would have been my first view of them.
DeleteI think the delayed birth certificates are interesting, especially seeing who wrote the affidavits.
