When Newspapers Published One's Comings and Goings

I would not have liked to live in the late 1800s and early 1900s when a person's comings and goings were announced in a local newspaper.  But I'm thrilled to find notices of my ancestors' activities from that time period.  Sometimes there are hints for street addresses and cities and towns, and sometimes I find the names of relatives.  I know the information may not be accurate but it can offer tiny pointers for the next searches.

Mrs. Catherine Froman, of these three news tidbits, is my g-g-grandmother, born Catherine Saylor.  Her husband, John Froman, died in 1871 when she was pregnant with their seventh child.  All six of their children were under the age of eight.  By the time of these articles Catherine had been a widow for more than 40 years.  It seems she had a close bond with her sister.

extended visit with her sister, Mrs.
Adam Lengerman.

boro, is the guest of her sister, Mrs.
Rosa Lingerman, of Canal street.

I have little documented information on Catherine's family of birth.  Her parents are Jacob and Elizabeth (Shaefer) Saylor and I know she has a number of siblings.  The most information I've found comes from an entry about Peter Saylor in a county history.  It seems he's Catherine's half-brother.  The writing in confusing, particularly regarding the pronouns.  (Does "him" refer to Peter or Peter's father or his grandfather, etc.?)  I'll have another go at sorting it out.  Knowing that Mrs. Adam (Rosa) Lingerman/Lengerman is Catherine's sister is a help.

I'm so grateful for modern technology that can read newspapers and tell us what it found.  It would have taken me hours, perhaps days and weeks and months, to find the information I found in a few days of searching this weekend.

  1. Since Catherine was a widow, is that why the paper used her first name instead of her late husband's name? But then later the paper uses Rosa's first name instead of her husband's name! Like you, I'm grateful for these social notes, which help fill in the blanks between official documentation and provide clues to who's who in family and FAN club.

    1. I had not considered how the sisters' names were used. Both were widows at the time these were published. Rosa lived in Greenville where the newspaper was published so perhaps she was known there and they used the more familiar form of her name? I really have no idea but it interesting. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment, Marian.
